The previous week have been pretty challenging for me and my business as I’ve had to work around the 7.1 quake here in Christchurch, New Zealand, with the harm it caused, the impact on my extended family and as the considerable after shocks continue.
A damaged office, power outages, polluted drinking water, helping others etc have all had their impact,. Most of the time it’s been tricky to spend greater than one or 2 hours a day engaged on the business.
While frustrating many times, this process has been a great teacher for me.
In the event you’re someone who works a really focused four hours a day (a choice I’ve made in order that I may enjoy the freedom I’ve developed) it’s a fascinating exercise to ask, if you COULD only work half as long, or less… possibly only 2 hours… what would you actually do?
If you could only carry out certain tasks to ensure your online business grows, what tasks would you do, and what tasks would you be compelled to abandon?
Before you’ll be able to answer that query, you must ask some others.
First it’s important to ask, “What ARE the most important things I do on daily basis?”
And before answering that, you must ask “How do I define ‘important’?”
You define ‘important’ as being the tasks you do that make the most important contribution to whatever end result is the objective of your business. For most of us, that end result is profit.
So now you’ll be able to go over the stuff you do day-after-day and rank them in order of their revenue generating capabilities. In itself, making a list of what you truly do daily and analyzing it can be tremendous for improving your productivity.
As you look over your listing, if you’re anything like me, you’ll notice that you actually spend a heck of a lot of time every day doing things that basically are not contributing to your bottom line much at all.
Are you doing something each day to bring in new customers? Discovering new leads, or testing/tweaking your sales material? Or are you bogged down in admin tasks, fiddling with the aesthetics of your website for no reason, or learning about some new technique that you’ve yet to put into practice?
The truth is, the good thing about taking this sort of personal inventory is two fold:
1. It will get you thinking about what tasks you’re doing which are actually making you money on a day to day basis, or what tasks you most need to perform to keep your online business growing.
You’ll no doubt notice that the things that you have to be doing, you’re probably not doing enough of. From there you’ll be able to work on… doing MORE of those things.
2. It makes you see that you just would possibly in actual fact be working far an excessive amount of, and for no net benefit. When you understand what your most important and profitable duties are, you can work at cutting away the fat, reducing the tasks that are wasting your time and your energy, and having more of your day to spend enjoying your life.
Give it a shot when you get a chance. Possibly even test yourself by choosing a day that you’ll work only 2 hours and see what, by default, you find yourself doing. Or in case you’re not that game, simply make a list of what you DO do on a normal day and go through rating the duties by their level of contribution to your profits.
Don’t forget the large contribution of having the right tools to automate, or at least reduce, the time needed to do the important tasks in your business. Some of the ones I simply could not do without are:
Phrase Express: I often find myself typing the same things over and over, and not just in online debates. PhraseExpress simplifies this process, enabling me to hit just a few keys to insert an oft-used expression and in doing so it eliminates repetitive typing. It’s stats tell me it’s already saved me 32 minutes today just from the amount of times I have used it.
RoboForm password manager: securely stores online and offline passwords, automatically logs you into online accounts and completes online registration and checkout forms with 1 click. Never battle with passwords again!
Magic Article Rewriter: utilize it to rewrite (spin) your articles quickly and easily and make literally lots of well-written articles in moments. I can take any article, hit one button and speedily have a perfectly well re-written article ready to post to my blogs, article directories etc that I can be proud to put my name too.
These three tools have almost certainly reduced the time it takes me to do the essential, profit producing, tasks in my business by around 30% and I recommend each of them highly.
