My dreams firstly have always involved my family, and now my wonderful granddaughter. My secondary dream has always been personal and financial freedom and my ability to travel where I want and for as long as I want any time I want. As you can see below.

My Thoughts On Facebook And Other Social Networking Sites

I get a lot of questions about social networking as a marketing medium. My usual answer is that it's not for me for a variety of reasons, so I'm not the person to ask. I have really no interest in Facebook and only minimal interest in Twitter. I do, however, have a few opinions about these types of sites, so read on if you care what I think.

1. Don't do it out of obligation

"You HAVE to be on Facebook." No, you don't. You need to figure out if it will work for YOUR business. Is the potential payoff worth the time and effort? It makes sense with some online business models and no sense with others. The big problem is that these sites can become huge time sucks and eat away at your valuable work time.

2. Treat it like any other marketing investment

If you're going to launch a social networking campaign, you should treat it as a campaign. Develop a strategy where you can gather and analyze the results of your investment, especially if you are enticing people with discounts in addition to your time and effort. Treat your followers or likes as you would an email list. Are they converting or are you just campaigning to be Prom Queen?

3. Own your people (well, not literally)

If you don't bring people to your site or a list or otherwise convert them to people who you can take with you, you have to worry about things like Facebook turning into Myspace or Facebook crushing your world because of a complaint. Can you take your Facebook people to Google+ if you need to? Think these things through and don't allow such an important part of your business to be held hostage to a third party, like Facebook or Twitter.

If you think it will be fun to experiment, go for it! If, however, you have been putting it off because you don't know what to do or dread it, consider those points I just made. If you want to get into this but have no idea how to get started, find someone who is experienced and successful to guide you.

Just keep in mind that you are running your own business. You don't have a boss or board members demanding that you get on Facebook whether you want to or not. It's your call. Don't let peer pressure or a "follow the herd" mentality dictate your decisions.

Facebook has launched a free downloadable handbook for parents and educators

Beware of “goofy” posts from anyone—even Friends. If it looks like something your Friend wouldn’t post, don’t click on it.
Scammers might hack your Friends’ accounts and send links from their accounts. Beware of enticing links coming from your Friends.
